The setup of the world that we live in today requires everybody to be conscious of the perceptions held about them by other people. It does not really matter if you’re consciously trying to build a personal brand because your actions and responses to social situations are constantly doing it for you.
What is a personal brand, and why is it important?
Basically, it is the continuous process of imprinting an image or impression about a person, a group of people or an organization/company in the minds of other people. These impressions will directly influence the perception that people exposed to it will have about the brand that you are trying to create.
The idea behind personal branding is simple – the better the impression that people have about you is, the higher the chances that they would respond positively to anything that you say or do. The same applies to a properly branded company or organization. It is easier to get people interested in your products or services if your personal branding is top-notch. You automatically look more professional.
Before you set about working on creating an impression about the brand that you’re working on, the first thing that you need to do is to find out about any existing impressions. As suggested earlier, it doesn’t matter if you are consciously trying to build a brand or not – your actions and reactions are doing it for you. This means that even if the idea of building a personal brand is new to you, there are chances that the people that you are trying to impress upon already have an opinion about you and/or your brand. There is an effective tool that can help you to know what such existing opinions are. Try it out.
When you’ve got that information, then you can proceed to using it to mold the new impression that you want to create. You need to define how you want people to identify you, and you also need to define your communication plan (This will particularly be useful for your social media accounts). For instance, when you are running a social media account for your brand, one of the keynotes in your communication plan should strike on the fact that any content that you put out must be aligned with your brand.
Personal branding is a huge part of growing a new brand or sustaining an existing one. It gives you a chance to effectively influence the opinion that people have about you, and also to use these impressions to your advantage. Check out the aforementioned tool to get started. Best of luck!
